The Herrin High School Tiger Paws Learning Lab provides a unique experience for all students involved. The Tiger Paws Program is officially known as Child Care Services. It provides high school Juniors and Seniors the opportunity to get first-hand experience in the field of Early Childhood Education. For many students, this is a career possibility and it can help one gain much insight on the requirements of the job and help them discover their own personal talents and abilities within the profession.
High School students are given the opportunity to work in all positions required for a successful preschool program. They all rotate through being Assistant Director, Lead Teachers, Assistant Teachers, Nutrition Break, and various staff positions. Students gain and/or strengthen important skills and qualities in areas of organization, initiative, responsibility, respect, teamwork, accountability, and confidence among many others.
High School students are definitely not the only ones who win with this program. Each year, up to 24 preschool age children are accepted into the Tiger Paws program. These students attend two days a week(Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday), for three hours a day. During this time, the students are taught lessons in curriculum areas such as: math, science, language arts, social aspects, art, music, and PE. Our goal is to give students a head start on learning and successfully prepare these Preschool students for Kindergarten.
Preference is given to children that join the program the year that they turn 3 before September 1st of that school year. Students that turn 3 between September 1st and September 31st, may still be placed on in a spot given the requirement that they turn 3 before the official start of the attendance year.
Typically, our attendance year starts during the first week of October and runs through our Graduation/Promotion ceremony at the end of April.
